Milestone Reached

Friday saw a milestone reached with our project to establish Pit 3 as a specialist Crucian Carp and Tench water.
The Environment Agency's Calverton Fish Farm had a particularly successful spawning year with their Crucian Carp, so much so they had too many to bring on in their stock ponds.
A quantity was passed on to the regional Fisheries Officer for distribution and as the Society has regular contact with him he was aware of our project and offered us some of the fish.
The fish were very small, basically 650 fingerlings (20 to 30 mm), but never the less very welcome. Remember mighty oaks come from little acorns. At this size, it would not be uncommon for up to 40% not to survive but, as there are currently no other fish in the lake to compete with them, they stand a reasonable chance. It was fantastic to see they immediately formed into shoals and some even visited our fish refuges as they explored their new home.
It's great to get to the point of introducing stock into the water but it will still take some time for us to build it to the level and quality we are aiming for. However, this is a great first step and
we have already been offered more support with both Crucian Carp and Tench that have been grown on being supplied in the winter.
Our thanks must go to the Environment Agency for their continued support.

Love this well done to all 👍👏👏
